ID Checking Suggestions
You DO THE MATH™ protects against human error during compliance checks. Unfortunately, some minors use fake or altered IDs to consume or purchase alcohol. Our staff of bar, restaurant and liquor store owners have compiled a few tips on how to prevent the use of fake or altered IDs.
Acceptable Forms of Identification
In most states, an acceptable form of identification includes a driver’s license, state ID card, military ID or passport.
Expiration Date
An expired ID is not a valid form of identification. The ID must be current.
Flaws in the Surface
A bumpy, folded or wrinkled surface may indicate an ID has been altered. Look for split edges on the license or other acceptable form of identification to see if the picture has been changed or replaced.
Font, Spacing and Typestyle
The font, spacing and typestyle should be the same throughout the license. Any changes in the typestyle or spacing, especially in the date of birth or the expiration date, indicates an altered ID.
Physical Features of the Person
Make sure the physical description of the person using the ID matches the picture on the ID and resembles the person. Check to see that the hair, eyes, height and weight all match. Makeup may be used by younger women to appear older.
Back-Up Identification
If you are still not satisfied, ask for a second piece of ID. People with fake IDs rarely carry back-up identification. Ask to see a credit card. People seem willing to give their ID to a friend but not a credit card.
Questions
Ask the person presenting the ID for the address, age, middle initial or have him or her write the signature on the back of the ID. Asking for the birth date and then asking for the age works much of the time. It’s amazing how many minors memorize the birth date but stumble on the math.
Backlight or Flashlight Test
When a license is held up to a light or has a flashlight shone behind it, no shadows should appear. Any transparencies or light coming through also indicates an ID may have been altered.
Check the Guide
Knowing the current look of each license for every state in the union can be overwhelming. Use an ID Checking Guide to be sure an out-of-state license is accurate if you are unfamiliar with that type of ID.
Know Your Rights
Remember, you have the right to refuse service to anyone you suspect is underage. Together, we can avoid the purchase and consumption of alcohol by minors. Stay licensed. Stay legal.
